Careers in Fashion: Stylist
Who really knows what a stylist is and what the job entails? Truthfully, it is a bit complicated because the profession is often associated with image and beauty specialists. Although image and beauty are linked to this profession, when we talk about stylists we must connect them to the world of fashion. The role of stylist is essential to this field. The stylist is the person who works directly with the clothes and is often the one who decides which looks are going to be trendy, in other words, what we will all be dying to have throughout the season.
Stylists and fashion magazines
In women's magazines, stylists are the cornerstone of the fashion section. They are responsible for selecting all the items that appear in the publication and, most importantly, they choose the clothing that will occupy the pages destined for the fashion editorials. They dress models, creating the most spectacular looks and reinterpreting the pieces shown on the catwalk, so as to familiarize us with them. Also, their work is very important on an artistic level, as fashion photography has become a discipline that is increasingly on the rise, and they are responsible for composing and giving life to these photos through color.
A little secret: Carine Roitfield, director of Vogue Paris, does the styling for the main fashion shoots. She was also a stylist and consultant to Tom Ford when he took the reins at Gucci.
Stylists and celebrities
You will not be shocked to learn that 90% of celebrities have a stylist who tells them which outfits to wear to look fabulous. Of course, a stylist is a highly regarded profession in Hollywood, but here in Spain it does not garner much attention. In Hollywood, every self-respecting actress, singer and celebrity has her own stylist, in other words, a person responsible for choosing her clothes for a particular event. One of the most famous stylists, Rachel Zoe, is responsible for Nicole Richie’s and Anne Hathaway’s most fabulous looks. Another designer who has undoubtedly revolutionized the fashion world is Patricia Field, the woman who dressed Carrie Bradshaw and her friends in every season of Sex and the City and, of course, in the film.
As you can see, the world of fashion is very broad and diverse. There is just one rule: above all, have good taste and a good eye.
